
Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine Threatens Global Food Security
The United Nations, along with the Turkish government, brokered an agreement that was a major breakthrough between Ukraine and Russia. The agreement was not only meant to reduce tensions, but also facilitate the transport of Russian food and fertiliser.
Russia, however, insists on the fact that the agreement’s provisions have not been implemented fully, and has set a deadline by which it must be resolved or else risk a withdrawal. This brinkmanship strategy is not a new one, as Russia unilaterally renewed the agreement for a lesser duration than stipulated in the contract.
Impact on Global Food Security
UN officials, analysts and other experts are worried about the consequences of not extending Black Sea Grain Initiative. Africa, Middle East and parts of Asia rely heavily on Ukrainian wheat and barley. The devastating effects of the drought are already taking their toll. A discontinuation of this grain deal would exacerbate the food crisis globally and increase prices. Sadly, the benefits of the agreement have not yet been felt by consumers.
